One of the most popular and beautiful LEGO® MOCs in the world right now is the McLaren P1 Hypercar designed by Bruno Jenson. We had the opportunity to talk with this very gifted LEGO® designer and asked him some questions about his amazing projects.

LEGO® McLaren P1 Hypercar

The McLaren Hypercar designed by Bruno consists of more than 3,000 pieces and has independent suspension on all wheels. Both the suspension and rear spoiler are adjustable. The McLaren P1 Hypercar has a working steering wheel and like in the real car the hood is detachable in one piece. You can watch all the incredible features in the following video.

We asked Bruno about his design process. How does he decide what sports car to model for example? Bruno explains that he only designs LEGO® MOCs that he wants to have on his shelf and enjoys himself. He prefers a color scheme that supports the classic recognizable look of the real car, but is also different from his previous models. For his choices of color Bruno is dependent of the LEGO® parts available on the market. The wheels have to match the original car as good as possible and this also limits the choice.

The next important step for Bruno is to choose the scale in which he wants to build his sports car MOC. He chooses mostly 1/10, 1/8 or something between this. Bruno explains that a choice out of this range will bring difficulties because of the wheel dimensions.

His current design method is as simple and straight as possible. Bruno does not compromise on the scale, deviations of max 1 stud in length of the front to the rear or in width of the wheelbase are tolerable. He does however make many other compromises that other designers never would dare to do in favor of the car authenticity.

When designing the chassis comes first starting with front and rear axle. Nothing of the design is final at any stage until full completion. Bruno explains that he tries and errors about 10-15 times per single section. If one mechanism is built, he builds an improved copy. He then disassembles the first version and builds again an improved copy. This continues until Bruno is really satisfied. He admits it is a long process, but he aims for perfection as we can see with his design of the LEGO® McLaren P1 Hypercar.
