LEGO® introduces tyres made from recycled fishing nets and motor oil

Good news for LEGO® fans and environmentally conscious builders! The LEGO® Group has taken another step towards sustainability with the introduction of LEGO tyres made from recycled fishing nets, ropes and motor oil. These eco-friendly tyres can already be found in selected LEGO sets and the full transition is expected later this year.

Sustainability on wheels

The new tyres contain at least 30% recycled material and are indistinguishable from traditional LEGO tyres. LEGO® expects these sustainable tyres to be found in around 120 different sets by the end of 2025. This is an important milestone in LEGO's ambition to make more products from renewable and recycled materials by 2032.

According to Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at LEGO®, this innovation is the result of five years of research and testing. "We have invested a lot of time to ensure that the recycled material meets our high standards for quality, safety and sustainability," Stube said.

More than just tyres

This new development is part of a broader strategy to make LEGO® products more sustainable. In recent years, LEGO has already launched several initiatives to reduce the use of fossil fuels:

Bio-polyethylene (bio-PE): Since 2018, LEGO has been using sugarcane-based bio-PE for certain elements, such as minifigure accessories and plant-like parts. Currently, more than 200 LEGO elements contain this sustainable material. Recycled artificial marble (arMABS): Transparent LEGO elements, such as windows and lightsabers, have contained 20% recycled material derived from artificial marble since 2024. e-Methanol and ePOM: LEGO is working with industrial partners to integrate innovative materials such as e-methanol into production. These materials will soon be used for wheel axles, among other things.

That is why the company works closely with suppliers, research institutes and other industries to enable the transition to renewable and recycled materials. Through these initiatives, LEGO hopes to make a positive impact on the environment so that future generations can continue to build their creativity without burdening the planet.

So, the next time you open a LEGO® set and hold a brand new tyre in your hands, it might just be that it was once part of a fishing net in the ocean! A small step for a LEGO wheel, but a big step for a more sustainable future.
