May 4. A day beloved by Star Wars fans around the world, and for good reason. It's the perfect excuse to pull out the Jedi robes, light up a lightsaber and have a Star Wars marathon. But how did this tradition originate? And why is May 4 so special to Star Wars fans?
Well, it all comes from a play on words. You see, "May the 4th" sounds a lot like "May the Force," as in "May the Force be with you," the iconic phrase used throughout the Star Wars franchise. It's a bit of an exaggeration, but it's a clever play on words that has taken on a life of its own.
The first official celebration of May 4 as "Star Wars Day" was organized by the Toronto Underground Cinema in 2011. They held a screening of the original trilogy and encouraged attendees to dress up as their favorite characters. The event was a huge success and soon other cities and fan groups around the world were holding their own May 4 celebrations.
Today, May 4 is a holiday in its own right for Star Wars fans. From themed parties to cosplay contests to special sales of Star Wars merchandise, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate. And, of course, there are always the movies themselves. Whether you prefer the original trilogy, the prequels, the sequels, or the spin-offs like Rogue One and Solo. May 4 is the perfect excuse to revisit your favorite parts of the Star Wars universe.
But there's more to May 4 than fan celebrations. The day has also become an opportunity for Star Wars creators to share new content and announcements with fans. In 2020, for example, Disney+ released the latest installment of the animated series The Clone Wars on May 4. And in 2021, they premiered the first episode of The Bad Batch, a new animated series set in the aftermath of The Clone Wars. You can always build a cool LEGO® Star Wars set, of course.
