Nessarose is the younger sister of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West. Nessarose is often referred to as the Wicked Witch of the East, known from the story of The Wizard of Oz.
Nessarose is physically disabled and dependent on a wheelchair, which inspires her brother Boq to help her, although his involvement is not always genuine love. Her father grants her the magical Silver Shoes to support her. Her difficult circumstances and the expectations placed on her often make her a tragic and isolated character. She struggles with jealousy, loneliness, and a strong need for control, which ultimately contributes to her negative transformation.
