The LEGO® Batman Movie

The LEGO® Batman movie is the sequel, or rather spinoff, to 2014’s The LEGO® Movie. As is probably obvious from the title, the movie doesn’t continue the story of Emmet the master builder but centres around Batman.
The previous LEGO® movie was incredibly sharp, funny, beautifully animated and had an amazing voiceover cast to boot. In my opinion it was one of the most underrated animation movies of the year. Of course it was a box-office hit and the LEGO® movie sets sold really well, but it was mostly passed off as a children's movie at first. But the jokes were so smart, the LEGO® animation style was incredibly well done and the eye for detail made the movie a must see for everybody in our opinion. Maybe the funniest, and arguably the movies break-out character, was Batman, voiced by Will Arnett. So that they chose to follow up on the LEGO® movie with a LEGO® Batman movie was a nice surprise.
The movie is set in Gotham City which is under constant threat of the Joker and his cronies. Luckily the citizens of Gotham city know that they can always rely on Batman to save the day. But this time the Jokers plan is different. Batman will have to get over his trust issues and drop the lone vigilante thing and work together with friends. Otherwise he won’t be able to save Gotham. Problem is, he is a bit of a loner ...
What I absolutely love about the LEGO® movies is that they borrow characters from all the available LEGO® themes, and this one is no different. This creates the unique situation that characters like Batman and Superman find themselves fighting with characters from the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and a whole bunch of other LEGO® themes. Even the Daleks from Doctor Who where there. This creates unique cross interactions that are unthinkable in other movie franchises, but are great to see as a fan. Which makes this even better is that they then use this to joke non-stop about the respective LEGO® themes and their source material. Which is great if you are a movie fan.
All in all this movie was very entertaining, its family friendly and truly for all ages. The story may be a bit predictable for parents and other older viewers, but the movies 104 minutes are so jam packed with action, jokes and story developments that it never becomes boring. In that sense its a real rollercoaster of a movie. Moreover the movie ceases every opportunity to make fun of the Batman source material and the LEGO® concept. This made it a great film. In the end the beautiful signature animation style arguably made LEGO® the real star of the movie.
