A group of young students and volunteers in Florida, USA has recreated Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” using nothing but LEGO® bricks.
Some 73 students and 30 volunteers, who belong to a LEGO® enthusiasts’ club associated with Oakland Presbyterian Church, used 78,408 Lego bricks to fashion the mosaic, according to the Orange Observer. The finished work is 10 feet long and 5 feet tall.
The project was particularly challenging because the group, called Oakland Presbyterian LEGO Users Group, had to work from scratch, as there was no pre-made “The Last Supper” Lego set to work with. In the absence of a kit, the students and volunteers used an app that designed the pattern for the set.
The app was created by the husband of Laurie Hallock, one of the group’s leaders.
“Mike programmed an application that took an imported jpeg file and created a pixeled image,” Hallock said. “The application was designed to take that pixeled image and, with some manual manipulation, produced a list of LEGO® parts needed. That application also assisted with creating the individual building steps, which is how the kids and volunteers knew how to build it.”
The group took a total of 50 to 55 hours to finish the LEGO representation of “The Last Supper.” The project cost the LEGO-club $4,600 dollars, which the members raised using registration fees at day camps and other activities.
The work has been exhibited at a number of shows and fairs, including the BrickFair LEGO® Expo in Virginia, where it won the Best Mosaic award.
