LEGO Super Mario needs scan codes, or bar-coded action bricks, to identify threats, powerups, friends and bonuses in the game. The Mario action bricks are not printed, but feature a sticker with a protective layer. This makes the scan codes more resistant to regular "scanning" by LEGO Mario (scanner).
Mario's goal in the game is to collect coins. This tile has the scan code: "coin". More coins ?!
