LEGO® Ideas Models of NASA Space Shuttle and Launch Tower

The LEGO Group is in the middle of considering for production fan-designed models of two historic NASA structures, the Saturn V Launch Umbilical Tower and the Space Shuttle. The launch tower set, created by Valerie Roche of Paris, France and Emmanuel Urquieta of Houston Texas, and space shuttle kit, designed by Andrew Harkins of Burbank, California, have each received the required 10,000 votes on the LEGO Ideas website. This makes the models just a step away from being approved for mass production. The LEGO model of the Space Shuttle was designed to the same scale as the NASA Apollo Saturn V set, which would make them compatible according to Collect Space. The 1,969-piece Saturn V kit, which was incidentally co-created by Roche and launched in June, has a 1:111 scale with the real rocket that transported astronauts to the moon some 50 years ago. The Space Shuttle, meanwhile, was launched in 2011. The LEGO Saturn V Launch Umbilical Tower, the new creation by Roche and collaborator Urquieta, takes after the 121-meter structure that provided support to the Saturn V as it was being prepared to be catapulted into space.The LEGO set includes a mobile launcher platform, along with movable umbilical swing arms, crane and elevator. Although it was submitted to the Lego Ideas website later than the launch tower model, Harkins’ Space Shuttle garnered the required 10,000 votes on Aug. 28. The Saturn V Launch Umbilical Tower kit completed 10,000 votes by Sept. 3. Harkins manifested disbelief at his feat in a message to supporters. "I never dreamed this would reach 10,000," Harkins said. "Even if this does not get approved, getting to 10,000 supporters means so much." Roche and Urquieta, meanwhile, expressed hope for their design getting chosen after deliberation by the LEGO in the coming months. "You and we now have to wait about four months to know the future of this design," Roche and Urquieta said in a note to fans.. "Let's cross the fingers so that the LEGO Group also chooses this design."
