LEGO Super Mario needs scan codes, or bar-coded action bricks, to identify threats, powerups, friends and bonuses in the game. The Mario action bricks are not printed, but feature a sticker with a protective layer. This makes the scan codes more resistant to regular "scanning" by LEGO Mario (scanner).
Mario's goal in the game is to collect coins: by walking, moving, and scanning the tile on the backs of bad guys. Some require only one scan, others many.
