Four clever MOC upgrades for the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train

The LEGO® City Vintage Steam Train (60511) has everything you’d expect from a classic train set: an atmospheric steam locomotive, a coal tender, a passenger carriage, a small platform and various minifigures. However, the journey doesn’t have to end once the official model has been built. Several MOC builders have got to grips with the set and are showing just how much potential it still holds.

From a few clever modifications to the locomotive to a longer passenger carriage and a complete conversion into a tank locomotive: the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train proves to be an excellent basis for your own LEGO train MOC. We’ll be looking at four interesting extensions and showing you which individual LEGO train parts you might need to get your own project on the tracks.

LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train as a basis for a MOC

The LEGO® City Vintage Steam Train (60511) consists of 575 pieces and, in addition to the locomotive and coal tender, also includes a passenger carriage, a track segment, a platform and five minifigures. The dark green, reddish-brown and gold-coloured details give the train a classic look that fits well within a historic LEGO town, a large railway station or a rural railway line.

In our review of the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train, we’ve already taken an in-depth look at the official set. The recognisable shape of the locomotive, the compact carriage and the option to motorise the train are what make the set particularly appealing to train enthusiasts.

That compact design also has an advantage. The train is relatively easy to customise without having to rebuild the entire design from scratch. With extra plates, tiles, slopes, train wheels, windows and couplings, you can alter the proportions, add new carriages or neatly finish off small openings. That is exactly what the following MOC builders have done.

1. More details for AndrewG123’s locomotive

You don’t necessarily have to build a completely new train to give the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train a different look. MOC builder AndrewG123 opted instead for a series of small improvements which, taken together, make a noticeable difference.

In this modification, the locomotive’s cab is made one stud longer. This gives the driver a little more space and makes the locomotive’s proportions look more balanced. The cab roof also gets a dark green border that blends in better with the rest of the colour scheme.

At the front, visible studs and a few unfinished sections are covered with tiles. The firebox door is positioned slightly further forward, whilst the firebox and the steam dome are raised slightly. Even the printed brick bearing the number 317 is repositioned beneath the cab.

The great thing about this MOC is that, according to the builder, it requires just 31 extra pieces. This makes it an accessible first LEGO train MOC for builders who wish to retain the original character of the set. You don’t completely dismantle the train, but rather refine the details that are less prominent in the compact official model.

AndrewG123 has made the building instructions and a separate list of additional parts available free of charge. Check out AndrewG123’s LEGO® 60511 locomotive modifications on Rebrickable.

2. A longer passenger carriage by Codan21

For many train builders, a sturdy steam locomotive with just one short carriage behind it feels a bit as though the conductor has left half the passengers standing on the platform. MOC builder Codan21 therefore devised a longer passenger carriage that better matches the locomotive’s more powerful appearance.

LEGO Carriage MOC

The longer carriage is 31 studs long and can accommodate six seated minifigures. It also retains the recognisable roof design of the official carriage. This ensures the extension blends in well visually with the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train, without it looking as though a carriage from a completely different train has suddenly been attached to the rear.

You can use this MOC as a replacement for the original passenger carriage, or as an extra carriage attached to the existing one. With two carriages, the steam train immediately gains in length and presence. What’s more, it creates more space for passengers, luggage and small scenes inside the carriage.

For this extension, you’ll need, amongst other things, extra train wheels, train windows, roof parts, plates, tiles and a magnetic train coupling. The complete carriage consists of 305 pieces. The free building instructions provided by the creator make this an interesting extension for anyone who wants to make the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train longer without modifying the locomotive itself.

Check out Codan21’s longer passenger carriage on Rebrickable and use the parts list to work out which extra LEGO parts you’ll need.

3. Build a tank locomotive with Sebulba56’s MOC

The third upgrade doesn’t just change a few details, but gives the locomotive a completely different look. Sebulba56 rebuilt the locomotive from set 60511, transforming it from a locomotive with a separate tender into a compact tank locomotive.

In a traditional tender locomotive, the coal and water are carried in a separate tender behind the locomotive. In a tank locomotive, these tanks are part of the locomotive itself. This creates a more compact model that is well suited to smaller stations, industrial railway lines and short regional trains.

LEGO Locomotive MOC

The shape of the official LEGO® 60511 locomotive lends itself surprisingly well to this modification. Sebulba56’s MOC uses many parts from the original set and requires only a limited number of extra bricks. The recognisable colours and the number 317 are retained, ensuring the tank locomotive still clearly belongs to the Vintage steam train set.

Also important for builders with a working model railway: according to the creator, the MOC is designed to run on standard LEGO train tracks. Furthermore, the model can be motorised in a similar way to the official set. This means you don’t have to choose between a beautiful display model and a train that can actually run round and round your LEGO city.

The building instructions for this MOC are available from the creator for a fee. Check out Sebulba56’s tank locomotive on Rebrickable for images, a parts list and instructions.

4. More luxury and postal transport with BuildLab’s carriages

Not every expansion needs to focus on the locomotive. A longer train only becomes truly interesting when each carriage has its own function. BuildLab has therefore created a more luxurious passenger carriage and an alternative post van for the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train.

The Deluxe passenger carriage offers the residents of LEGO City more space and comfort. Thanks to its extra length and more elaborate interior, the carriage feels more like a proper carriage for longer train journeys. The design remains consistent with the colours and architectural style of the official set, so the carriage can be placed behind the locomotive without any major stylistic disruption.

The design also includes a post office variant. This carriage can still carry passengers, but also offers space for letters, parcels and other postal items. This allows you to instantly add a new storyline to your LEGO train set. Have the train stop at a small village station, unload the post and use a delivery van to distribute the parcels further throughout LEGO City.

The BuildLab instructions cover both the Deluxe Passenger Carriage and the postal variant. Parts lists are also included, so you can search specifically for the bricks you need. The instructions are available from the creator for a fee via Rebrickable.

Which LEGO® 60511 MOC upgrade suits your train?

The four MOCs clearly demonstrate that you can expand the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train in various ways. AndrewG123’s modifications are ideal if you mainly want to add more detail to the existing locomotive. You need relatively few extra parts, and the official design remains clearly recognisable.

Codan21’s longer passenger carriage is particularly interesting if your train needs more length and capacity. Sebulba56’s tank locomotive completely changes the character of the train, whilst BuildLab’s Deluxe carriage and post variant add new play possibilities to the railway line.

Of course, you don’t have to stick to just one upgrade. For example, a customised locomotive by AndrewG123 can be combined perfectly with the longer carriage by Codan21. You could also add the post office carriage by BuildLab as an extra carriage. In this way, the compact LEGO City set gradually grows into a complete historic train.

Here’s how to find the extra LEGO® train parts at ToyPro

Every MOC on Rebrickable comes with a parts list. When a design is created as a modification of an existing set, you can often compare which parts are already included in the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train and which bricks you still need to add.

Make a note of the LEGO Design ID or Element ID for the missing parts. You can use these numbers to search specifically within ToyPro’s range of loose LEGO® parts. You can also enter the set number 60511 to view the parts from the original set.

For these train extensions, individual LEGO® train parts are particularly useful. Think of magnetic couplings, carriage undercarriages, buffers and other special parts for locomotives and carriages. For longer carriages, you can also check out the categories featuring individual LEGO® train wheels and LEGO® train windows.

When collecting parts, pay close attention to the colour. The dark green, reddish-brown and gold-coloured parts are key to the distinctive look of the Vintage steam train. If you can’t find a specific colour, you can also give your MOC its own colour scheme. A black locomotive, a dark red carriage or a completely brown post van could actually give your train a unique character.

Motorising the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train

The official LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train is designed to be expanded with LEGO Powered Up parts. Various MOCs also take this possibility into account. To create a remote-controlled train, you’ll need a Powered Up hub, a train motor and a compatible remote control.

The LEGO® Powered Up Bluetooth Hub supplies the power and enables the wireless connection. The LEGO® Powered Up train motor can be fitted underneath the tender or a modified carriage. You can then use the LEGO® Powered Up Bluetooth remote control to set the direction of travel and speed.

Please bear in mind that a longer train is heavier than the official model. You should therefore check that all the train’s wheels turn smoothly and that the couplings have sufficient room to move when negotiating bends. A carriage with swivelling wheel sets usually handles tight bends better than a carriage with fixed axles when the train is longer.

Also take a look at all the electric LEGO® train parts if you want to motorise your own locomotive or train MOC.

Make the track big enough for your new MOC

A longer Vintage steam train naturally deserves more than just one small track segment. With individual LEGO® train tracks, you can build a complete railway line with straight sections, bends and points. Add an extra station, a goods shed or a small maintenance yard, and the train immediately takes on a logical purpose.

By combining classic and modern LEGO® City train sets, you can also create a railway network where different eras come together. Let the vintage steam train run tourist services whilst modern passenger and freight trains run on the other tracks.

Thanks to the creators of these LEGO® train MOCs

We’d like to thank AndrewG123, Codan21, Sebulba56 and BuildLab for designing and sharing their extensions for the LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train. Thanks to creative builders like these, official LEGO sets are given a new lease of life and train enthusiasts can constantly discover new ideas.

The MOCs mentioned are fan designs. The building instructions are provided by the creators themselves via Rebrickable. ToyPro is not involved in the sale or availability of these instructions, but is happy to help you find the individual LEGO pieces you need for the designs.

Give your LEGO® Vintage Steam Train its own route

The LEGO® 60511 Vintage Steam Train is already an atmospheric set, but with a few clever modifications, it can become the centrepiece of a complete LEGO railway layout. Add more detail to the locomotive, build a longer passenger carriage, convert the model into a tank locomotive or add a special post van.
