Voldemort, the nickname for Tom Marvolo Riddle, is Harry Potter's archenemy, who, according to a prophecy, "has the power to defeat the Dark Lord." He tries to kill the boy, but instead kills his parents, Lily and James Potter, and leaves Harry with a scar on his forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt. No one dares pronounce his name and refers to him with nicknames such as "You-Know-Who," "He-Who-Not-Called," or "The Dark Lord."
Voldemort's goal is to rid the wizarding world of Muggle heritage (non-magical) and to conquer both worlds, Muggle and wizarding, and achieve the domination of pure blood. Voldemort is obsessed with blood purity. Through his mother's family, he is the last descendant of wizard Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is the leader of the Death Eaters, a group of evil wizards and witches bent on ridding the Wizarding World of Muggles and establishing Voldemort as supreme ruler.
