Oswald the Lucky Rabbit originated in 1927. However, only the second version of Oswald was the official beginning of the animated series and became Disney's biggest success to that time.
In the spring of 1928, a disagreement arose between the creators, Walt Disney and Charles Mintz of Universal Pictures. Disney refused to accede to Mintz's demands and discontinued the Oswald series. Meanwhile, he and others had begun drawing his cartoon character Mickey Mouse; this one was based lightly on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mickey Mouse would become the enduring symbol of The Walt Disney Company.
