Valeria Russo had always had to fight. As the first female driver at Haas, she knew the world looked at her critically. But criticism had never stopped her. Today, on the fast and unforgiving Monza circuit, she had one goal: score points.
The start was chaotic. From P12, she had to fight her way to the front. In the first corner she narrowly avoided a crash, her instincts razor-sharp. "P10, keep pushing," her engineer sounded in her ear. She didn't let that be said twice.
With a bold overtaking move in the Variante della Roggia, she overtook an Alfa Romeo. P9. Adrenaline coursed through her body. Monza was her circuit, the Tifosi cheered - even though she did not drive for Ferrari.
With three laps to go she was on P8, but her tires were wearing out. Behind her lurked an Aston Martin, ready to strike. On the final lap, she defended aggressively, blocking every attack and keeping her car perfectly on the track.
The finish flag fell. P8! Haas finally had points again and Valeria had shown that she was not just a driver, but a fighter. When she got out of her car and heard the crowd cheering, she knew for sure: this was just the beginning.
