These scanner codes add interactive elements to your LEGO Mario level. The codes are used to trigger or register certain actions when you place the LEGO Mario or LEGO Luigi figurines on a code. It is an essential part of the interactive play elements found in the various LEGO® Super Mario™ sets.

How it works.

1. Parts with scan code:
In the LEGO Super Mario sets, there are building blocks-mostly tiles-with a scan code on them. These scan codes are small, patented patterns that you can scan with your LEGO Mario or LEGO Luigi. This is because the LEGO® Mario™, LEGO® Luigi™ or LEGO® Peach™ figures have a built-in color scanner located on the bottom of the figure.

2. Scanner inside the LEGO Mario / LEGO Luigi / LEGO Peach figure:
The LEGO® Mario™, LEGO® Luigi™ and LEGO® Peach™ each have a color scanner located under the belly of the figure. When the figure moves over a LEGO element with a scan code, the scanner reads the code. The figure then responds by making sounds or animations corresponding to what the code represents, such as receiving coins, activating an enemy, or performing a special action such as defeating a Goomba or Koopa.

3. Activating actions:
Depending on the code being scanned, Mario can exhibit different reactions, for example jumping over an enemy such as a Goomba or Koopa. LEGO Mario then makes a specific sound and you receive coins.

4. Using the LEGO Super Mario app:
The LEGO Mario figures are also connected to the LEGO Super Mario app (available on smartphones). This app offers additional play options and lets you track your progress, complete challenges and even create new digital levels. In the app, for example, you can view your scanning history, improve your score, and share your progress.
