There is no set rule for the shape of a shield. Most existing shield shapes originate from the draughtsman's pen. By knights and warriors in different countries, shields were used that, in addition to fashion, were adapted to specific requirements of the warfare of the time.
This oval shield without print (no decorative heraldry) fits so much with LEGO knight, but also does not look out of place as armor for the LEGO ninjas.
But who says that this part should be a coat of arms of a minifigure!? For example, this shield can also be a nice decoration on a monumental LEGO building! Provide a clip and you attach this shield wherever you want. LEGO wouldn't be lego if you can't also come up with another application for this part.
