The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a small, tree-dwelling mammal found in the mountain forests of the Himalayas and southern China. With its reddish-brown fur, fluffy tail and black legs, it resembles a cross between a raccoon and a fox. Despite its name, the red panda is not related to the (giant) panda, but belongs to its own family, the Ailuridae. It is mostly active at night and dusk and feeds mainly on bamboo, fruit and small animals. Due to deforestation and poaching, the red panda is endangered and is listed as a vulnerable species.
