Monumental mill uses LEGO® to make age-old techniques accessible and tangible

As you know, LEGO® is much more than just a toy. LEGO® is also educational and ideal to explain all kinds of concepts. The Sint Anna mill in Weert has the great ambition to make the monumental building and its operation more accessible for people with disabilities. A part of this project is the creation of a feeling table, which is built with LEGO® and other materials.
At the touch table, visitors can feel different types of grain being milled in the mill, such as wheat, rye and oats. A lot happens in a mill when grinding the grain. The mill consists of many different parts, such as the sails, the windrow, the catch and the lazy mechanism. All these parts have a function when grinding. To make this accessible for people with visual impairments, part of the mill has been recreated with LEGO®.
This allows people to feel in a safe way how the sails set the main shaft in motion. Also simulated with LEGO® is the winch with which the bags of grain are hoisted to the milling floor, the lazy and the drive of the millstones. With the LEGO® construction, people can literally feel the working and the moving parts of the mill in miniature. Because we think it is such a beautiful project, ToyPro donated the LEGO® for the feeling table.
To make the mill more accessible, the board has also made the ground floor wheelchair friendly and installed cameras to visualise parts that are difficult to access. The theme of the Open Monument Day 2021 is inclusion, and the Sint Anna mill manages to achieve this in a very nice way. We therefore encourage you to visit the mill on 11 or 12 September during the weekend of the Open Monument Day. More information can be found on the website of the Sint Anna, Windmill of Keent.
