LEGO® History: LEGO® Technic

With its complex mechanical functions and realistic building experience, LEGO® Technic has captured the hearts of millions of builders around the world. Nowadays, you will also find LEGO® Technic parts in many "regular" sets. So let's take a look at the exciting history of LEGO® Technic and discover how it evolved into what it is today.

The Pioneering Years:

In 1977, LEGO® launched a new product line called "Technical Sets," which later evolved into the name "LEGO® Technic." The idea behind these sets was to enable children and adults to build more complex and realistic models than ever before. With special technical parts, such as gears, axles and pneumatic systems, LEGO® Technic opened up new possibilities for mechanical construction.

The 1980s:

In the 1980s, sets became increasingly sophisticated and challenging. LEGO® introduced iconic models such as the "Auto Chassis" (set 8860) and "Helicopter" (set 8844), which set a new standard for realistic building experiences. As the popularity of LEGO® Technic grew, it also began to find its way into educational institutions, where it was seen as a useful tool to develop engineering skills and creative thinking.

The 1990s:

In the 1990s, LEGO® Technic continued to innovate. The brand introduced the "Studded Beams" system, which provided more stability for the models while allowing seamless integration with the classic LEGO® bricks. This allowed builders to unleash their imagination and create complex models that were both functional and visually impressive.

The 21st century:

With the advent of the 21st century, LEGO® Technic made further advances. Electronic components, such as motors, sensors and remote controls, were integrated into the sets, giving the models an interactive element. Now builders could control their vehicles remotely and were able to build complex machines that could actually move.

LEGO® Technic in modern times:

Today, LEGO® Technic has become one of LEGO®'s most comprehensive and diverse product lines. It offers a wide range of sets, from simple models for beginners to challenging builds for experienced technical builders. With each new product, LEGO® Technic continues to push boundaries and introduce groundbreaking designs, keeping the sets appealing to both young builders and adult enthusiasts.

LEGO® Technic's influence goes beyond toys. It has inspired generations to take an interest in engineering, mechanics and technology. Moreover, it has contributed to the development of several industrial designers, engineers and architects.
