View this impressive anime MOC and meet his designer

Mathijs Dubbeldam had a goal. He wanted to build the most accurate EVA Unit 2 in the world with LEGO®. For readers who do not know what we are talking about, this is a character of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. After hours of designing and constructing, we think Mathijs has succeeded. He has built a very impressive MOC!

We had the opportunity to talk to Mathijs about his special MOC and his passion for LEGO® You can read our interview below.

ToyPro: What has been the reason or inspiration to build the most accurate EVA Unit 2 with LEGO®?

Mathijs: You might think that I must be a huge Neon Genesis Evangelion fan to build this, but that’s not completely true. The anime is definitely one of the most talked about series that Japan has ever produced. Personally, I especially like the design of the giant robots (which are actually aliens ...) very cool; bizarre and elegant at the same time. Years before I started this, I discovered that a Japanese master builder, named Moko, had made EVA Unit 01 (a similar robot from the series) on a huge scale and with extreme precision. Something like that had not yet been tried for Unit 02, and I saw my window of opportunity.

ToyPro: What were the biggest challenges while designing and building this MOC?

Mathijs: In general: the organic and bizarre shapes. The shapes made sure that no part of this structure was really easy. Two parts, however, were much more complex than the rest: the head and the upper part of the torso. I made a new head four times before I thought it was accurate enough. The upper part of the torso, was the biggest challenge, because everything comes together in this part: backbone, breastplate, shoulders, neck and back. I really had to apply all my technological knowledge to be able to unite those parts!

ToyPro: Have you used software and / or other tools when you were creating this?

Mathijs: Yes, I partly designed the "blades" on the shoulders and hands in LEGO® Digital Designer. This is because during that time my project table was occupied for a different project.

ToyPro: Are there any funny or remarkable details that you have incorporated in the EVA Unit 2?

Mathijs: Not visible in the photos, but behind the neck is a flap that can be opened to put the so-called "entry plug" in it, it’s a kind of pill that contains the pilot in the series. Partly because of this detail, the upper part of the torso became incredibly complex, but I really wanted to be able to surpass Moko’s Unit 01 in at least one aspect. That one did not have a functional entry plug.

ToyPro: Can you tell something more about yourself. Who is this person behind this very special MOC?

Mathijs: I am 22 years old, and in daily life I am a water management student. I have had a broad interest in nature, science, and architecture from an early age. I convert that interest into inspiration for all kinds of buildings, but mainly medieval fantasy and science fiction creations.

ToyPro: Do you have any tips for our readers who want to build a similar MOC?

Mathijs: My tip: from LEGO® you can copy everything exactly, as long as you choose the right scale. That’s why the question is not whether you can make something, but rather how can you make something.

ToyPro: Do you have any ideas for the next MOC, or are you already working on it?

Mathijs: Plenty of ideas and not enough time to make them! I even have an idea waiting list. I currently am working on a medieval fantasy building.

ToyPro: Mathijs, thank you very much for your time and inspiration. We want to wish you all the best in building many more beautiful and special LEGO® creations.
