ToyPro is partly based in the Netherlands and just like in other catholic areas, the southern part of the Netherlands celebrates carnival. Traditionally this was the last chance to let yourself go, drink, eat and celebrate before the sober fasting period before Easter began. It used to be a feast that mainly revolved around eating and drinking the things you aren’t supposed to have during the fasting. All throughout Europe people used to dress up, drink and eat together, and parade through the streets. Although its now mostly celebrated in the catholic parts of Europe carnival has a long history which goes back to Roman and pagan traditions, where people already dressed up and paraded through the streets.
Most people don’t fast anymore but carnival is here to stay! It is celebrated around the world, think of the carnival in Rio the Janeiro, the masked carnival in Venice or Mardi grass in New Orleans.
People dress up, don’t take themselves as serious and come together to party. A special part of the three to four-day celebration is the carnivals parade. In this parade carnivals groups parade through the streets with beautiful Carnival floats. Some groups go for the best design, others are funny or comment on local politics, local events or even the world at large.
Why are we talking about carnival on the ToyPro website? Well Dennis Beelen and his son made a beautiful stopmotion video featuring a carnivals parade made of LEGO®. The video gives an inside in the carnivals tradition but above all it’s a beautiful showcase how people can express themselves artistically and creatively with LEGO®. Enjoy!
Dennis and his son Jesper have a YouTube channel and website where they post LEGO® stopmotion video’s. Even though the video are in Dutch we highly recommend the videos on his channel. Because of the quality and eye for details Dennis and Jesper seem to have we think the videos speak for themselves.
