Meriadoc Brandybuc, or Merry for short, is the nephew of his great friend Peregrin Took and a second cousin of his other friend, Frodo Balings. Merry has an adventurous temperament, is cheerful and exuberant by nature. Unlike Pepin, he takes Frodo's Quest seriously from the beginning.
During their journey to Rivendell, Merry leads the Hobbits through the Old Forest, where he is captured by the Old Wilgeman and fortunately freed by Tom Bombadil.
Merry and his friends Sam, Frodo and Pepin first meet Aragorn in Breeg, where they expected to meet the wizard Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf, however, has sent Aragorn as a substitute.
In the forests of Rivendell, they all meet. So do Aragorn and the eight others of the traveling company whose task was to aid and protect Frodo, the Ring-bearer, on this quest. It is decided by the Council of Elrond that the Ring must be destroyed in Doom Mountain.
