Aragorn is part of Journey Company of the Ring. The traveling companionship was formed by the Elf Lord Elrond in Rivendell for the purpose of accompanying the hobbit Frodo Baggins on his quest.
Frodo and his friends Sam, Merijn and Pepin first meet Aragorn in Breeg, where they expected to meet the wizard Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf, however, has sent Aragorn as a substitute.
In the forests of Rivendell, they all meet. So do Aragorn and the eight others of the traveling company whose task was to aid and protect Frodo, the Ring-bearer, on this quest. It is decided by the Council of Elrond that the Ring must be destroyed in Doom Mountain.
