Mulan, the only daughter of the Fa family, returns home after the encounter with the matchmaker went all wrong; no husband for Mulan. This at the hands of her lucky cricket Cri-Kee, whom Mulan had received from her grandmother.
Meanwhile, the Huns led by Shan Yu are gathering for an invasion at the Great Wall of China. When the emperor hears of the invasion, he orders that one man from each family must serve in the army. Mulan's father is the only man in the family, but he is already old and infirm. Mulan is sure he will not survive the war. She decides to pretend to be a man and take her father's place.
Mulan's grandmother asks the spirits of their ancestors for help. These decide to send one of the family guardians to protect Mulan. Mushu, a small dragon and the family guardian is instructed to awaken the stone dragon in the garden. However, this turns to disaster, he accidentally destroys the dragon. Of necessity, he goes after Mulan himself along with Cri-Kee.
