Dr. Facilier is a voodoo witch doctor who often uses magic and tricks on the street to take money from customers. His shadow can move independently and influences Facilier (and vice versa). Therefore, Dr. Facilier is also known as the Shadow Man.
Coming from a poor background, Facilier grew to dislike the rich and wealthy. However, not so with the most powerful man in town, Eli "Big Daddy" La Bouff. One day Facilier sees LaBouff give a huge amount of money to the paperboy after receiving the newspaper. The jealous Facilier and his shadow look on in horror, knowing there must be a way to make themselves as rich as Mr. LaBouff.
Facilier plans to rule New Orleans (and eventually the whole world) with the help of his "friends on the other side," and tries to outdo his rival through voodoo and pawns while sacrificing the souls of New Orleans residents to his "friends."
