LEGO® BATMAN™: Legacy of the Dark Knight review

LEGO® BATMAN™: Legacy of the Dark Knight review

LEGO® BATMAN™: Legacy of the Dark Knight is finally out, and it immediately feels like a bigger, cooler and more modern LEGO® Batman game. Whilst previous LEGO® games mainly revolved around simple action, puzzles and plenty of humour, this game feels more like a genuine Batman experience in LEGO® form. You dive into Gotham City, use gadgets, drive the Batmobile, take out enemies and collect everything in sight along the way.

The game clearly draws inspiration from the well-known Batman: Arkham games, whilst remaining recognisably LEGO. You can tell this from the accessible gameplay, the visual gags, the over-the-top characters and the many collectable items. The result is a game that’s cool enough for Batman fans, yet light-hearted enough for players who mainly enjoy LEGO games.

Playing as Batman feels more powerful than ever

The biggest improvement lies in how Batman plays. Combat feels smoother and more dynamic than in many older LEGO games. You don’t just smash enemies to collect studs, but also use counters, gadgets and movement to keep groups of opponents under control. As a result, Batman feels more like a trained crime-fighter and less like a standard LEGO character with a cape.

The use of gadgets also makes the experience more enjoyable. Batman is meant to be clever, quick and prepared, and this comes across well in the gameplay. You use gadgets to distract enemies, overcome obstacles and navigate your way through Gotham. The game remains accessible, but it does give you a greater sense that you’re actually playing as Batman.

Gotham City is the real star of the show

Gotham City is more than just a backdrop. The city feels like a vast LEGO playground full of side missions, collectables, vehicles and that unmistakable Batman atmosphere. You’ll drive through dark streets, search for hidden rewards and constantly come across new references to films, comics and previous Batman stories.

That’s what makes the exploration so compelling. You don’t just play your way from mission to mission; you naturally get sidetracked by everything there is to discover along the way. That’s exactly what LEGO games excel at. You spot something glinting, knock a few objects over, find a secret passage, and suddenly ten minutes have flown by. In LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight, this works particularly well, because Gotham is packed with so many recognisable Batman elements.

The Batmobile makes the game more fun

A Batman game without the Batmobile wouldn’t feel complete. Fortunately, the Batmobile plays a prominent role in LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Driving through Gotham adds a sense of speed and variety to the game. It’s great to be able to do more than just walk or glide between missions – you can actually race through the city like Batman.

For fans, the variety of Batmobiles is particularly interesting. The game cleverly draws on Batman’s long history and features various vehicles that reference well-known films and eras. As a result, the Batmobile doesn’t feel like just a simple means of transport, but like part of the Batman collection.

LEGO® humour keeps things light-hearted

Although the game clearly feels more gritty, the LEGO humour remains. That’s important, because Batman can quickly become heavy and dark. LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight actually uses that serious atmosphere as a basis for jokes. Menacing scenes are lightened up with slapstick, unexpected details and typical LEGO chaos.

This combination works well. Children get an accessible Batman game, whilst older fans will recognise plenty of references. The game takes Batman seriously, but not too seriously. This keeps it fun to play, even when the missions revolve around familiar villains or dark moments from Gotham.

Familiar heroes and villains give the game its character

The game isn’t just about Batman. Allies and adversaries from the Batman universe also add variety. Think of characters such as Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, Catwoman, Jim Gordon and familiar villains from Gotham. Each character brings their own skills, humour and recognisability to the game.

That said, the selection of playable characters feels more focused than in some older LEGO games. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Instead of hundreds of characters that differ little from one another, the emphasis is more on a smaller group that really suits the story and the gameplay. As a result, the game feels less like a long checklist and more like a focused Batman adventure.

Using codes from physical LEGO® Batman sets in the game

A nice extra feature of LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the link to physical LEGO Batman sets. With certain LEGO Batman sets, you can obtain a code that unlocks digital golden bonus items in the game. This makes building a set even more fun, as you can then use something in the game as well.

The code isn’t included as a separate card in the box. You use the QR code on the front of the building instructions. By scanning that QR code and registering your LEGO Batman set via your LEGO account, you’ll receive a unique unlock code. You can then enter that code in LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight via the in-game redemption system.

LEGO BATMAN Legacy of the Dark Knight

How to use the code:

  • - Log in to your LEGO account or create a new LEGO account.
  • - Take the building instructions for your LEGO Batman set.
  • - Scan the QR code on the front of the building instructions with your - smartphone.
  • - Register the LEGO Batman set via your LEGO profile.
  • - Receive your unique unlock code.
  • - Enter the code via the redemption system in LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

\The codes can only be used once. For each LEGO account, you can redeem one corresponding digital item per promotion. The codes are guaranteed to be valid until 1 March 2029. After that, they may no longer be redeemable.

Which golden bonus items can you unlock?

The bonus codes grant access to golden digital items. These aren’t essential for completing the game, but they are fun extras for collectors and Batman fans. The golden Batmobiles, in particular, make the link between physical sets and the game particularly interesting.

There is, however, one important condition for the golden Batmobile variants. You must first unlock the standard black version of the vehicle in the game. You do this by playing the game and completing side quests. The code therefore grants access to the golden variant, but you must first earn the basic version of the vehicle yourself.

The codes make collecting more fun

The digital bonus items don’t completely change the game, but they do make the collecting aspect more enjoyable. LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight is largely about discovery, unlocking and collecting. A golden Batman or golden Batmobile fits in perfectly with that.

For children, it’s great that a physical set unlocks something extra in the game. For collectors, it feels like an extra reward for buying and registering a set. This works particularly well with Batman, as vehicles such as the Batmobile have been a key part of the LEGO Batman range for years.

How does the game feel after a few hours of play?

The gaming experience is at its best when you’re moving freely through Gotham. The combination of combat, vehicles, gadgets and collectables ensures you’re always kept busy. The game encourages you not only to follow the story, but also to take side paths and explore the city bit by bit.

The missions themselves feel cinematic and familiar. You can tell the game has a real love for Batman as a character. Familiar moments, vehicles, villains and styles are brought together in a single LEGO version of Gotham. As a result, the game doesn’t feel like a run-of-the-mill licensed title, but rather a celebration of Batman.

Still, it’s not perfect. Some fights can become a bit repetitive over time, and not every side mission feels equally special. You also need to enjoy collecting to get the most out of the game. Anyone who just wants to rush through the story will miss out on some of its charm.

Strengths

  • - Batman plays more actively and powerfully than in older LEGO games.
  • - Gotham City is fun to explore.
  • - The combination of Batman’s atmosphere and LEGO humour works well.
  • - The Batmobile and other vehicles add variety.
  • - The game is packed with references for Batman fans.
  • - The codes from physical LEGO Batman sets unlock fun digital bonus items.
  • - Local co-op makes the game ideal for playing together.

Cons

  • - Combat can become a bit repetitive over time.
  • - Not all bonus items are available without specific physical LEGO sets.
  • - To get the gold Batmobiles, you first need to unlock the standard version in the game.
  • - Players who aren’t keen on collecting items won’t get as much out of the extra content.
  • - There’s no online co-op, so playing together is mainly of interest locally.

Final verdict

LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a strong LEGO Batman game that feels more like a proper gaming experience than a simple LEGO take on Batman. The game combines action, humour, gadgets, vehicles and an open-world Gotham City into an adventure that’s particularly enjoyable for players who love exploring and collecting.

The Arkham-style combat gives Batman more power, whilst the LEGO humour prevents the game from becoming too serious. As a result, the game is suitable for younger players, but also appeals to older Batman fans who recognise all the references and vehicles.

The link to physical LEGO Batman sets is a clever extra. By scanning the QR code on the building instructions, registering your set and using the code in the game, you can unlock golden bonus items. This strengthens the link between building and gaming. The golden Batmobiles, in particular, are a great addition for collectors.

LEGO BATMAN: Legacy of the Dark Knight is therefore highly recommended for Batman fans, LEGO collectors and players who love open worlds full of secrets. The game isn’t flawless, but the atmosphere, humour and collectable value make it one of the most interesting LEGO games around at the moment.
