The best documentaries about LEGO®

This year of course marks LEGO®'s 90th anniversary and if you want to do something other than build, or you have nothing else to do for a while, be sure to watch these five documentaries about the Danish company.

In 1916, when Dane Ole Kirk Christiansen started a wood sawing company in Billund. He initially started making furniture, but in 1932 he also started making wooden toys called Lego. When plastic became more popular after World War II, the plastic bricks were born, which we still know today. It wasn't until 1958 that the toys really became a phenomenon. It was when the company filed a patent for the bricks with the familiar studs on the top and the hollow bottom. But we won't go into further details, because they do that much better in these fantastic documentaries.

1. Beyond the Brick: A LEGO Brickumentary

First up is the documentary Beyond the Brick: A LEGO Brickumentary This documentary was made by Daniel Junge and Kief Davidson, the epitome of knowledge about the Danish toy. This documentary fully covers the origins of the company, the craziness surrounding the toys and the insane builds people exhibit at trade shows. If you love LEGO, this is a must-see.

If you want to see the full documentary, you can do so on AMAZON Prime

2. AFOL: A Blockumentary

Although AFOLS are touched on in the above documentary, AFOL: A Blockumentary goes a lot further. As you probably know the abbreviation stands for Adult Fan of LEGO. It taps into an important fact: LEGO is not just for kids. Adults of all backgrounds and educations build the most unique, self-designed creations in the docu. Thanks to this short documentary, we are reminded again that LEGO gives people the opportunity to be creative and even to make art.

3. James May builds a LEGO house

Maybe this is not really a documentary, because James May 'just' shows that with simple bricks a whole house can become reality. The famous presenter of Top Gear, among others, had exactly that aspiration. It became a bizarrely large project, but the Brit got it done. Would you like to live there? At least not us. The bed doesn't look very comfortable and you step on LEGO bricks all the time.

4. LEGO House: Home of the Brick

LEGO itself went one step further. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the third-generation family after Ole (and CEO at the time), wanted a "home" for LEGO. To do so, he hired the famous architect Bjarke Ingels, the CEO of the firm BIG that had already received many accolades for previous designs. Even this brilliant architect became childishly excited by the task. Fun fact: The LEGO House stands next to the small workshop where Ole made his first toys.

5. The LEGO® Story

Last we have The LEGO® Story, an animated film about the birth of the lego cube and how Ole Kirk Christiansen started in his sawmill. This film was made by LEGO® themselves when they turned 80.
