Review: LEGO® Mario Kart™ - Mario and standard kart (72037)

Yahoo! The collaboration between LEGO and Nintendo continues to be surprising and innovative, and the LEGO® Mario Kart™ - Mario and standard kart (72037) is a fantastic example of that. And in this review, you can read our building experience.
Build away
The box contains a total of 17 bags, an instruction booklet, a plastic bag with tires and rims. There are also 2 tires loose in the box. Why these were not in the plastic bag with the other parts is beyond me. What is also nice to see is that there are absolutely NO stickers with it. First the kart itself is built. That is the biggest part of building this set. The base consists of LEGO® Technic parts. This makes the final kart very sturdy. These are later again hidden as much as possible by "normal" lego parts so that the kart continues to look sleek. To get the various curved corners and openings in the kart, clever use of SNOT (Studs Not On Top) techniques and hinges are used.
The mechanism to make the kart steer is disappointing. The angle at which the front wheels can turn is minimal and the steering mechanism does not feel solid. But then again, it is a display model and you are not going to drive it around.
Display Stand
The next part in the build is a stand on which you can place the kart. A nice addition but could have been better. The stand is quite simple and it allows you to tilt the kart slightly forward or backward. If for example a tile with printing with data about the kart had been added, it would have given even more display value.
It's-a me, Mario
The final part of the build is, of course, Mario himself. Mario is pretty well made in LEGO form although he has comparatively quite small feet. Special parts were made especially for the mustache and nose. The "M" on his cap, the eyes, ears and mouth are printed and really bring Mario to life.
The legs have limited mobility but Mario always remains in a seated position. The arms are already a lot more movable so you can put Mario with his hands on the wheel or, for example, cheering with one arm up. The head is also movable, but because the head itself is quite heavy it does feel a bit wobbly. Furthermore, the round shapes make Mario's cap look great. Using Technic parts again, the sometimes complicated angles are perfectly reconstructed from the Super Mario Kart games
Our verdict
All in all, this is a very successful LEGO® version of Mario and his kart. And a real collectible and display item for Mario fans. The Kart and Mario look like they came right out of one of the games.
