Meet Andrew Rocksteady and his LEGO® City collection

In this episode of our series meet our fans we introduce Andrew Rocksteady. Andrew is a passionate collector of LEGO® City sets for which he as a reserved a entire room in his house. In this article we will discuss his love for LEGO®, how it started and his goals for the future.

ToyPro: Your passion for LEGO® started around 5 years ago. How did it start?

Andrew: I work at a retail job that has a large collection of LEGO® and started with buying a few sets that interested me. I grew up with LEGO® as long as I can remember. I had massive totes full of LEGO® and would play and build cities/creations all weekend long. As a working man, I was able to afford some childhood toys that I haven't had in years. The biggest push out of everything was when the LEGO® Movie came out in 2014 and I saw the city that was built in the basement. It was then that I wanted to build my own city one day and I was going to go all out with it.

ToyPro: Your collection consists of LEGO® City, Creator, Advanced Modular and Pirates sets, what do you like so much about these sets?

Andrew: The part of LEGO® City I like the most is that it is going to be around for as long as LEGO® is around. Themes will come and go and City is endless. LEGO® is continuously introducing new themes and every year they reintroduce 1 theme from the past. I collect some Creator and Advanced Modular sets, because the City theme doesn't have basic houses or stores unless they are the city square sets. I bought the Pirates ship when it was released a few years back, mostly to fulfill a childhood dream of never owning one.

ToyPro: Do you have plans or goals for the future?

Andrew: I would like to build a full scale city that has all the different subthemes laid out. It will be quite a large area, but it will be absolutely amazing. I would like to build it differently than most people and it will be a mix of LEGO® building and vehicles, but the landscape will be most like the fancy train tables you see where everything looks real. Luckily I am going to school for engineering and I have some very smart friends that I would like to have them wire the city with lights so I can make the city come to life even more. I also have a friend who has a 3D printer and who is willing to make me custom LEGO® bricks so I can custom the city even more.

ToyPro: Are you building only standard sets or MOCs as well?

Andrew: I will have to build some MOCs so that my collection has more than police/fire stations. Currently I am not building them due to space. I have however a pretty large amount of spare LEGO® so when the time comes, I will be able to get a good start at it.

ToyPro: Do you have some tips for our readers?

Andrew: I don’t have too many tips as I think I've been pretty lucky buying all my LEGO®. I've spent $11K on my LEGO® and have saved $2.8K based on their original retail value. So as the years have passed the value has drastically grown. So it makes this investment worth it. Most people don't realize LEGO® is one of the few things that constantly goes up in price as the years go on. It is worth investing in if you are smart with it.

ToyPro: Andrew, thanks for your time and good luck building your LEGO® City in the future.
