Back in time with the Atari 2600 from LEGO®

Do you remember it? The iconic Atari VCS/2600 was an instant hit when it was introduced in 1977, a nostalgic recreation of one of the most famous video game consoles of all time. The new LEGO set is based on the four-switch version produced in 1980. The release of the new LEGO set is in celebration of Atari's 50th anniversary.

After bringing the first commercially available arcade game ever to the market in 1971, Americans Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney founded the company Atari Incorporated in 1972. With this company, they soon released more games and it grew into one of the largest game producers in the world, so in 1977 they decided to bring their first game console to the market. This is the famous Atari 2600, on which this LEGO® set is based.

From unpacking to adding the last brick, building this intricate set is a nostalgic journey in itself where you discover features like the controller, with a moving joystick to make it feel like the original. LEGO® builders and gamers alike will enjoy opening the front cover and revealing a pop-up scene from an 80s game room, evoking memories of hours spent trying to beat their high score.

The set also includes three video game cartridges from iconic Atari games in brick format: Asteroids™, Adventure, and Centipede™. The cartridges can be stored in a case and converted into mini versions of the games. In addition, the console includes a switch that allows you to choose whether you have a color or black and white television.

Lifelong Atari fan and LEGO Designer Chris McVeigh, who designed the set, said, "The Atari 2600 was one of the most memorable gifts I received as a child. I remember sitting in front of the TV for hours, dumbfounded that I could play arcade games at home. There were also so many legendary titles, including Asteroids, Adventure, and Centipede. That's why it was such an incredible experience to bring two icons together, Atari and LEGO, in this amazing set.’’
