Relax with LEGO®

Adults turn to creative hobbies to relax and switch off from a hyper-connected, busy life.

  • New research by The LEGO® Group among more than 30,000 adults worldwide shows that 93% of adults regularly feel stressed and 80% are looking for new ways to relax.
  • The research, from The LEGO® Group's 'Play Well 2022' report, shows that 'hands-on' creative activities can be the solution. 86% of adults say play helps them relax from work, while 89% say it keeps them mentally sharp.
  • To help adults relax, the LEGO® Group announced 'LEGO® Lates', a series of evening events in LEGO® shops around the world, combining insightful lectures, performances and fashion shows with creative building activities.

According to research from the LEGO® Group's global 'Play Well 2022 Report', the vast majority of adults (93%) worldwide are regularly stressed and 80% say they actively seek new ways to relax.

The report, which surveyed more than 30,000 adults from 33 countries around the world, found that many find it difficult to disconnect from work, with 6 in 10 (58%) admitting to relaxing for less than an hour a day and 5 in 10 (55%) saying they find it difficult to disconnect.

The survey also found that 41% of adults feel more stressed now than in 2019. Work emerged as one of the biggest stressors for adults, the report found:

  • Three in five struggle to disconnect from work (60%)
  • Three quarters check their emails outside work (74%)
  • Two thirds find it harder to maintain a work-life balance than before the pandemic (61%).

In response, 80% of adults are actively seeking new ways to unwind, with the vast majority (92%) seeking to do so through activities related to their hobbies and interests. For many, the best way to unwind and relax was through more manual, hands-on activities:

  • More than three quarters (78%) felt that doing something creative or manual was more fulfilling than doing something passive (such as watching TV).
  • Half say learning new creative skills has become more important to them now than before the pandemic (53%).
  • 87% say playing helps them relax and feel calm, while 86% say it helps them unwind from work and 85% say it gives them relief from daily life, chores and worries.

Genevieve Cruz, Head of Product for the Adults audience, The LEGO® Group, said, "LEGO® building is not just for children, and being creative with LEGO® bricks can help adults relax, feel creative and get a real sense of achievement. This kind of activity transcends age and can benefit builders both young and old. We have been advocating quality creative play for nine decades, and our Play Well 2022 survey proves that there is still a place for LEGO® building for adults."

There are more than 100 different products in the range of LEGO® sets for adults from wonders of the world to movie magic, intrepid space exploration to pop culture icons, and from luxury cars to architectural masterpieces designed to offer adults a fully immersive, hands-on, mindful activity to help them switch off. Regardless of passions, there is a LEGO® set for everyone to explore their favorite passion in a new creative way.

To introduce a new hobby and an alternative way for adults to relax, the LEGO® Group launched LEGO® Lates, a series of after-hours events for adults, in partnership with BAFTA Masterclass, Universal Music Group and Grace Chen. Taking place at LEGO® shops in London, Shanghai and New York, the events combined creative LEGO® building activities with enlightening lectures, performances and fashion shows to inspire guests and show how LEGO® building can help adults relax and find their flow.
