With a vocabulary that consists entirely of “I am Groot,” the tree-like Groot hails from Planet X, a world of sentient plants. Originally a hulking, size-changing giant who provided the Guardians of the Galaxy with both its muscle and its heart, Groot sacrificed himself to save the team and was reborn in a much smaller and younger form. It remains to be seen what role the new Groot will fill as a member of the Guardians, but it is clear that Rocket will always be his best friend.
